Features of the GMC Sierra EV Denali Edition 1
The age of the E-Truck is officially upon us—just a couple years ago, the Hummer EV was released as a pickup alongside the classic body style. Now, as expected, GMC is following hot on its heels with the first ever all-electric GMC Sierra, and guess what? Production is already ahead of schedule.
According to their website, orders for the first run of Sierra EVs is already full, but that doesn’t mean we can’t get excited about the awesome specs and amenities of the Edition 1, a highly limited special trim meant to start things off with a bang and give first buyers a taste of what’s to come.
Here are some of our favorite things about the best new electric truck of 2024.
The Best Range Yet
When it comes to electric vehicles, the biggest sticking point for most people is the question of driving range. Nobody wants to be stuck on the side of the road with a depleted battery pack.
GM seeks to put those worries to bed once and for all with the Sierra EV. Currently, its estimated range is a whopping 440 miles. Yes, you read that right—that’s double what some EVs can manage, but more importantly, it’s more than other electric truck competitors like the Rivian R1T and the Tesla Cybertruck. By current projections, the GMC Sierra EV is going to be the electric truck with the best range by a country mile.
That range is also a serious improvement over initial estimates of 400 miles, and even if it varies slightly in real-world practice, it’s still a heck of an impressive stat.
Lightning-Fast Charging
Charging speed is the other side of the logistical coin when it comes to EVs. After all, what good are massive range estimates if it takes all day to recoup its battery?
Fortunately, the Sierra EV is capable of industry-leading 800-kilowatt DC fast charging. Using these souped-up public chargers, it’s able to gain 100 miles of battery life in just 10 minutes. More and more of these ultra-fast chargers are popping up all the time, and the hope is that they’ll eventually become the standard everywhere.
At-home charging is looking solid as well. Admittedly, regular 7.7-kilowatt level 2 charging isn’t looking all that promising at only 14 miles of range per hour, but GM has a solution. The available PowerUp+ charging station allows for 19.2 kilowatts of capability and provides about 34 miles of range per hour, which’ll allow you to hook it up when you get home and wake up the next day with all the juice you need.
Crazy Powerful
Full power output specs have yet to be released, but we do know one particularly exciting detail: the Sierra EV features a Max Power mode, which optimizes performance to provide a boost of strength, speed, and towing capacity.
Drumroll please; in Max Power mode, the Sierra EV cranks out a projected 754 horsepower and 785 pound-feet of torque. Yes, that’s the real estimate.
With those specs, GM predicts a 0 to 60 speed of about 4.5 seconds thanks to the blindingly quick acceleration the Ultium battery platform provides.
Masterful Capability
With that kind of torque and horsepower, it should come as no surprise that the Sierra EV is shaping up to be a proper workhorse.
Current estimates for max payload are 1,450 pounds, and max towing is 10,000 pounds. These figures are an improvement over previous estimates from last year.
Endless Utility
As an available feature, GMC has included one of the most groundbreaking cargo solutions we’ve seen. Dubbed the MultiPro MidGate, it’s a company first and it promises to take the payload game to the next level.
Here’s how it works: by removing the rear window panel and folding second-row seats, the cabin opens up to the bed in a single seamless platform. When used in tandem with the adjustable MultiPro Tailgate, it creates up to 10 feet and 10 inches of bed length.
The tailgate itself is adjustable in six different ways too, allowing for next-level functionality and ease of access. To top it off, it also features a power-open eTrunk where a gas-powered engine would be, and this frontal storage compartment is both lockable and weather resistant.
Plug In Anywhere
The Ultium Platform doesn’t just work to power the truck; it can also power your devices and toys.
Available vehicle-to-load offboarding power through the Power Station Pro and PowerBar+ accessory can provide 10.2 kilowatts anywhere you go. Basically, it’s an onboard generator that can be used for any number of camping, tailgating, and overlanding activities.
GMC also claims that, when properly equipped, the Sierra EV can provide power to essential at-home devices for up to three weeks.
All-Wheel Articulation
A pickup truck is many things, but most people wouldn’t describe them as especially maneuverable. The Sierra EV promises to change that—you’ve heard of four-wheel drive, now say hello to four-wheel steering.
When engaged, this setting lets the rear wheels turn with the front ones, allowing for a greatly reduced turning circle to negotiate tight spaces. In addition, the four-wheel steering allows for a slick GMC-exclusive feature called CrabWalk, which works by turning all four wheels in same direction, enabling the truck to drive diagonally at low speeds.
Abundant Tech
A main focal point of the cabin is the gigantic center touch screen display, which measures 16.8 inches. The display is fully customizable and positioned low on the dash to ensure it’s out of the driver’s main sightline. The center stack also features a tactile dial and buttons below to give it that satisfying click when you want to control volume, climate, and other auxiliary functions. Audio is complemented by an available Bose Premium 7-speaker system with a Richbass subwoofer.
The Edition 1 also comes standard with the panoramic glass roof, as well as trim-exclusive interior accents.
Design From the Future
Looking at the Sierra EV, there’s no mistaking that it’s a different beast altogether.
The frontal profile swaps the classic grille in favor of a body-colored flat panel with vertical ribbing below, and the headlights are strikingly angled. From the side, we notice that the beefy C-pillars are instantly recognizable, and the bed sides slope down in a soft contour that suggests a nimble driving manner.
They’ve taken the rugged design cues from the current-gen Sierra 1500 and softened them, but it hasn’t lost the can-do character of the classic GMC truck. To sum it up, it’s safe to say we’re big fans, and we can’t wait to get our hands on one when it finally comes to town.
